WINTER OUTFIT: DO YOU DO WINTER SPORTS?

This weekend has been been significant in my country's history for two reasons. General election on Saturday (with ambivalent results) and a Women's Ski World Cup race in Jasná, my local ski resort. My family and I have gone to watch, only to arrive and find out the race had been cancelled due to strong wind. A little disappointing, especially seeing how much planning and effort went into the event, but understandable.<br />

You don't know this about me, but I grew up around winter sports. The first time I stood on skis was when I was 3 years old. I spent winter weekends on the hill, skiing with a local ski club. I wasn't very good, mind you and I wasn't the most enthusiastic skier, so at the age of 10 I decided to swap skiing for snowboarding. I fell in love with it instantly - and I was actually good at it! Between ages 10-18, I spent a lot of time on the slopes, not on a competitive level, but it felt great to find a sport I enjoyed. Nowadays I don't get to do it very often, living in England for 4 years, the conditions for snowboarding were nonexistent (don't even try mentioning dry slopes). Even back home, my local ski resort got bought up by a huge financial group and unless you get a season pass, the tickets are so so overpriced. So these days, I go crosscountry skiing or alpine skiing instead. It's the best alternative to snowboarding I know of...<br />

WINTER OUTFIT: FROM WINTER TO SPRING

Are you guys ready for spring yet? I've been thinking about my spring wardrobe this past week and right now I'm in the inspiration process, scrolling through pinterest and my favourite sites. I have a S/S16 wish list that's growing fast, but of course I'll whittle it down radically once my mind is made up about where I want my style to grow this spring. Upon reflection, I'm doing fine with bottoms and shoes, but what I need to work on is tops and sweaters. Gots nothing to wear! Okay, that's <strike>probably</strike> obviously an exaggeration, but indulge me for a moment, will you?<br />
<br />
I've built up my winter sweater collection last year and I'm reeeally happy with it. For this spring, there are a couple sweaters I'm eyeing that would complete my spring sweater collection too, so that's an easy solution. The tops and t-shirts though...that's the hard part. I'm forever searching for those interesting but versatile pieces. It seems they are either too basic or too complicated - bold patterns are <i><a href="http://www.hm.com/us/product/37803?article=37803-B#article=37803-A">the thing</a></i> this season. I want something in the middle! Like <a href="https://uk.pinterest.com/pin/80783387044533255/">this king of a shirt</a> from Madewell's spring lookbook.<br />
So anyway, I've got my work cut out for me.<br />

Let's talk a little bit about this outfit. I love how one accessory can change a whole look, as the scarf does here. The colours carry a hint of spring and compliment a lot of simple outfits nicely. It's a great recipe for making old and worn-so-many-times pieces fresh again. The outfit's not something I planned to wear, I threw it on and really liked it - don't you love when that happens? WINTER OUTFIT: THE STATEMENT SKIRT

Hi friends! How have you been? The past couple of weeks you can really smell that scent of early spring in the air. All that's missing now is som greenery and fresh new leaves on the trees so we can officially call it. I'm still living in my winter wardrobe, though I'm slowly starting to think about the spring one. I have a feeling it's going to be among the lines of urban cool. I'm kind of into sneakers at the moment! I'm really liking the outfit and it's basically because of this skirt. I kind of got it on a whim in the sales, inspired by<a href="https://uk.pinterest.com/pin/80783387044786780/"> this amazing outfit</a> of Carrie's from wishwishwish. I was looking for a fun piece and I couldn't be happier with it. It´s in the <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2016/01/winter-capsule-wardrobe-extras.html">Extras wardrobe</a> because I don't wear it often...but when I do...it's perfect. At first I was struggling to find a top that would go with it but in the end I found a few that work. Most of my basic tops and even my rose gold sweater do. Maybe next time I try it with a breton shirt? Is that too much? Haha.<br />
<br />
I'm hoping to shoot some more outfits next week for you, fingers crossed, as lately it's been hard to manage the light and a photographer. (Hashtag: blogger problems, right?) I have at least 15 outfits that I wore in the past months and that were worth documenting. Wish me luck! And also in the upcoming weeks I'm hoping to share a few insights on planning for my spring wardrobe and update you on how I'm doing. If you'd like to hear about something in particular, I'm open to suggestions!<br />

WINTER OUTFIT: AN ODE TO A COSY SWEATER

Everyone needs at least one cosy sweater in their wardrobe. Wouldn't you say? They're the best thing you could wish for in the cold. And if it's stylish all the better! You bundle yourself up and the softness of it is divine. You don't even mind it's winter! It's clothes like this that give me confidence and make me feel good about my wardrobe. And ideally, my capsule wardrobes will contain more and more of these pieces as time goes by. That´s the goal, anyway.<br />
<br />
I paired the sweater with my trusty denim button up skirt. I <strike>usually</strike> always wear it with tops and sweaters tucked in so to have it layered over was a nice change. If you remember me talking about really wanting a skirt like this in black, then, spoiler alert, I finally found one that I like the length of (i.e. not too short). It will be with me next week and I honestly cannot wait. If it fits well, it will for sure become a staple in my wardrobe.<br />
<br />
The rest of the outfit I left quite simple, you know me, and it just occurs to me that all of these clothes are from just my <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2016/01/winter-capsule-wardrobe-foundation.html">foundation wardrobe</a>. The look reminds me a little bit of <a href="https://uk.pinterest.com/pin/80783387042807585/">this pin</a> - that sweater is just the right amount of cosy.<br />
<br />
I´ll keep it short today and wish you a lovely Tuesday. It's starting to feel like spring here and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Do you have any cosy winter sweaters you cannot be without? WINTER OUTFIT: SPOTLIGHT STEALER OF A CARDIGAN

We have snow again! I'm spending the weekend with my grandma and as I'm writing this, I'm watching the snow fall outside her windows. This outfit is one of <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2016/01/winter-capsule-wardrobe-outfit-uniforms.html">my winter uniforms</a> in action. When I saw this cardigan, it was one of the few things that I felt like I absolutely <i>had to</i> have. I mean, there was no going back! And I think I'd have loved it even more if I had it in the <a href="http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=485326328&site=www.shopstyle.co.uk&pid=uid6400-30551420-82">dark red colour</a> which seems to be sold out worldwide (sad face).<br />
<br />
I wore this cardigan practically non stop for a week after I got it, really getting those cost per wears down. It's not a thick one, but because it's a waterfall cut, you can wrap it around yourself a little. This is the cardigan that changed my styling game. Before I got it, I gave little thought to what I was going to wear it with. A cardinal sin with the capsule wardrobe, remember the rule: think about at least three outfits from the clothes you already have before you purchase anything? But like I said, there was no going back. I was decided to make.it.work. Just slap on a t-shirt or whatever. I brought it home and tested the possibilities. It seemed that the cardigan performed its best when the rest of my outfit was muted, boring even. Because the cardigan itself is quite a loud, statement item, though subdued in colour, it does best when paired with plain clothes. I hear you think: <i>You don't say!</i> but you know what, life is full of small realisations, however insignificant, and this is one of them: an outfit can work if only one item does the talking. Like, <i>all</i> of the talking. There's nothing special or interesting about the rest.<br />
<br />
It's not some huge news and I'm not going to build all of my outfits based on this idea from now on, but there is finally a reason for all those plain clothes we find in our closets. Let's get some use out of them! (Though I'm an owner of plenty plain things, I found out I was lacking in the boring t-shirt department so I got two basic t-shirts to go under my winter sweaters. Surely you wouldn't want to waste interesting t-shirts by hiding them under a chunky knit? That's another realisation for ya.) Any <i>does all the talking</i> items in your life lately? Or absolutely <i>have to</i> have items you're determined are <i>the</i> thing that will make you tick? The best thing about this cardi is that I think it will work in summer too. Boho vibe, jean shorts outfits, here I come!<br />

MY WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE OUTFIT UNIFORMS

One of the most important things I've learnt since starting a capsule wardrobe in 2014 is the idea of a <i>uniform</i>. Everyone has one, or two, or three and realising what they are makes quite the difference - whether you're in the stages of planning a capsule wardrobe or shopping for new clothes. I wrote about how to establish your uniforms <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2014/09/step-1-find-your-capsule-wardrobe-uniform.html">here</a>. And a free capsule wardrobe workbook <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/03/minimal-wardrobe-workbook-free-download.html">here</a>. When you know your uniforms it instantly makes capsule wardrobes easier - suddenly you know what to get and how much to get of it. It gives you a much needed <i>framework</i>. And truth is, it may take more than one season to get it right. It's taken me almost a year and a half until I started to feel like I'm finally getting it down. Until I started to feel a liiittle bit stylish. This winter I put together four uniforms that I use to build my everyday outfits. It's kinda great to see them in black and white.<br>

This is perhaps the uniform that makes me feel the most stylish. Like a bundled up New York girl hailing a cab to drive her to her amazing Brooklyn loft. Haha. But you know what I mean. I feel very effortless and free and confident. As a side note, I love the idea of signature pieces (more about those in the workbook). In short, it's the pieces that best represent your personal style. The "I wear this all the time and it makes me feel amazing" pieces. Your absolute faves. In the boho uniform this is the button up skirt (which I <i>need</i> in black too! Desperately!), the oversized scarf and the black bag, inspired by this season's Chloé it-bag, but from Mango for 20$. Score.<br>

WINTER OUTFIT: ON CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLOURS

The first winter capsule wardrobe outfit, I'm excited, are you? The first real snowfall of the season holds a special sort of magic in it. The world transforms before your eyes into something soft and clean, into a place new and undiscovered. If you've ever danced in the rain, you'll know. The feeling can't be beat. Dancing in the snow, by a faint light of a street lamp, that's when time stops. Then later starts again.<br />
<br />
Burgundy was a colour I always associated with autumn, not winter. It's never been amidst my favourites, but I have a feeling that's about to change.  Turns out, it's a pretty versatile shade, not too bright but very rich at the same time. Easily combined with others. And it goes with my hair (always a plus). Wanna know something? According to the colour season typology, it is totally <i>not</i> my colour. Not even close. It's actually the opposite of what my colours should be. But here I am, wearing it like there's no tomorrow (a flair for the dramatic, anyone?). When choosing a colour of a garment, I go by mood and taste, but most importantly, I go by gut. It's a trial-error process but if you're looking to liven up your closet, it's worth it. Sometimes the most unlikely of colours look great on you. It's fun to do the test, sure, and by all means go ahead and find out what season you are, but ultimately, the internet doesn't know you, doesn't see you and doesn't get to dictate what you look good in.<br />
<br />
My burgundy blouse has these lovely lace sleeves, so I let them peek out from underneath the rollneck to add a bit of texture and interest to the outfit. I really like this look, it's simple, wintery and stylish. Even though it's the first one, I have a feeling it will be one of my favourites. Oh and I forgot to include the blouse in my capsule wardrobe graphics - oops! I wear it every week too!<br />

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: puritan;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">I think I just thought it was something fun to do and also to have some documentation of what life was like. I mentioned on here before that I started the blog to share my family's travels to Australia in 2011. I'm really glad I did that - many little memories would otherwise be forgotten. Plus looking through those posts is like looking through a photo album.</span></span><br />

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: puritan; font-size: 14px;">Ah! A hard one! I don't have a definite answer but would have to shortlist pancakes, sushi, a family meal recipe we call meat in a bowl and an almond cake. And a poppy cake. The shortlist is long. I could go on.</span><br />

That would be: New York, Bali, Paris, French countryside, American countryside (somewhere that you get real seasons, don't think I could do California). I'd also love to live, say, in Yellowstone or some gorgeous national park, or in a glass house in the mountains. As you see, I'm not fussed :)</span><br />

You know those nights when you're out and it's late and you'd give anything just to be in bed - but you get home and you have teeth to brush, a dress to take off and make-up to remove...well that's when this little power comes in handy. Tired? Wanna go to bed? Click your fingers and be ready!</span></div>
