10 x 10 SUMMER CHALLENGE: THE OUTFITS

Most of you are already deep into thinking about fall colours and style but I hope you can indulge me in this summery round up. It's been a long time coming but I am finally getting around to showing you the outfits I made from my ten (+3 shoes) items. If you follow me on <a href="http://instagram.com/katberries">instagram</a> you probably saw these, though with the new algorithm one can't be sure, right? 
 
I had a lot of fun taking these photos and putting the outfits together. As it happens, I planned all my outfits beforehand, because I'm the kind of person who's inspired by new experiences / visual stimuli. If I'm looking at the same clothes for a while, the inspiration just flows right out. That's why I'm an advocate for "hiding" my clothes off-season. When I get a new piece, what I try to do is note down all the ways I could style it, because I know the ideas will be coming to me the most when the piece is still new to me.

Why did I do the 10 x 10 challenge? 
a) I hate my personal style in the summer 
b) I have very little summer clothes I feel good in, so I needed to try do more with less 
 
Did I learn anything from the challenge? 
For sure. It taught me I can't just wing it, for me to be successful, I have to do a bit of planning. As I said, as the challenge goes on I become a bit fed up with the clothes and it helps immensely to have a ready-made list of outfits I can wear. 
 
It also reassured me that yes, you can have a colourful wardrobe and still have mix and match potential. 
 
I have a better idea of my style than I did a year ago, but I am nowhere near done. 
 
Why did I cheat and actually work with 13 items including shoes? 
10 items altogether just seemed too much pressure to me. I know I struggled last year toward the end of the challenge and that didn't include shoes either. And who says? The truth is I could have made at least 3 more outfits from my selection (so really 13 x 13) but they didn't particularly add anything new or interesting. Here they are in basic form:

I mean yeah but nothing to shout from the rooftops about. 
 
My favourite outfits? 
I'm actually finding it hard to pick one or two I like the most - which is a good thing! So perhaps I'll tell you which feel the most me: #1, #4 and #9. I also love #2 it's such a lovely holiday outfit, but perhaps a little too girly for my style. 
 
And my least favourite? 
Definitely #3 and #10. Both including the stripy dress - which I guess says a lot about said dress... 
 
Will I do this again? 
Most definitely. It's a great way to refresh my stylistic game and explore where my style is at and where it's going. It's like a separate entity. 
 
Perhaps in winter I'll jump on the Unfancy + Style Bee bandwagon. I might even include shoes. But no promises here!

10 x 10 SUMMER CHALLENGE

Why, hello! I seem to have begun me a tradition last summer with my first <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/06/10-x-10-mini-summer-capsule.html">10 x 10 challenge</a>. The idea comes from <a href="http://stylebee.ca/">Lee</a> and it's very straightforward: I'll be building 10 outfits out of 10 pieces. It's a great exercise to test your styling skills / get excited about a small wardrobe / try out a non-comital capsule wardrobe as an experiment. It's pretty fun. And if you travel and tend to overpack, it teaches you how you don't have to. Speaking from experience here. 
 
Let's talk rules real quick. Mine are loosened up - I have 10 items that are clothing and I don't count shoes into that, though they are part or the graphic below. So yes, I have 13 items, and you can call that cheating or you can get on board <img alt="😉" class="emoji" draggable="false" src="http://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/72x72/1f609.png" style="background-color: white; background-image: none; border: none; box-shadow: none; box-sizing: border-box; color: #494949; display: inline; font-family: "open sans", helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; height: auto; letter-spacing: 0.2px; line-height: 23.4px; margin: 0px 0.07em; max-width: 100%; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: -0.1em; width: 1em;" />. I could make it into 13 outfits, but I'm too lazy and a one-woman-show right now. Let's have a look at the <strike>13</strike> 10!

The colour palette is pretty standard for me: blues, greys and reds. I've found my jam, and now my goal is to brighten up my wardrobe with more colours and feel confident in them. (I've started with a bright yellow dress. It's amazing.) 
 
One big change to last year's edition is that I'll be posting the outfits on my <a href="http://instagram.com/katberries">instagram</a>, do give it a follow, instead of the blog. I flatlay-ed them and all. 10 x 10 CHALLENGE RECAP

Time to sum up the <a href="http://www.katberries.com/search/label/10x10">10 x 10 challenge</a>, ladies and gentlemen. I picked <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/06/10-x-10-mini-summer-capsule.html">ten things</a> and made ten outfits with them. And I'm forever glad I didn't include shoes in this challenge, otherwise you'd be looking at totally similar outfits :) I definitely need to keep practising my styling game some more.

Towards the end of the challenge, somewhere around outfit 6 or 7 I was admittedly struggling to come up with looks that would be interesting enough to post. I still had outfit no. 8 (red skirt + red striped top) up my sleeve, but the last two, those were a handful I tell ya. In the end I opted for simple looks.</div>

You've seen all these outfits here before, so I will run through what I've learned by doing this challenge:</div>

1. It's definitely harder to accomplish diversity between the outfits than it looks, especially if you see them all laid out next to each other (like you do here ;) ). </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
2. I find that I liked having some colour in there - it did prevent me from feeling like all the outfits looked the same - which is precisely how I would have felt if I was working with only neutral coloured pieces. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
3. I'd recommend choosing a colour palette of no more than 5 colours, at least 2 out of which should be neutrals. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
4. You just have to try it on - is a motto of this challenge. With such limited amount of pieces, you have to try every possible combination - and you'll be surprised, some of them will be the best! </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
5. Probably a no-brainer, but pick pieces that can be used in different ways. Dresses that can be worn as skirts and tops, shirts that can be layered over dresses or tops, etc. </blockquote>

6. Have fun! Push yourself but don't beat yourself up about it if you can only create 8 outfits. This is not an exercise in sadism. It's all about learning something new - about yourself, your style, or the limits of fashion.</blockquote>

Oh dear friends, it's been a long time! I've been absent from the blogging world in August and even if I hate when bloggers apologise for not blogging (let's not fall into a bad pattern here) here I am, saying sorry to you. I hope I haven't let you down too much! 
 
Last month meant a bit of an unplanned blogging holiday - I had a big move (more on that later, perhaps), and went on holiday with my family. Now I'm back and it's September and I can (finally!) finish with the 10 x 10 series. 
 
Throughout July I'd been feeling a little burnt out and somehow it made me stop in the middle of this little series. But the break was much needed in the end, I caught a second wind and I'm excited to get things back up and running again. Note the change in appearance! I drew the header myself and I do kind of love it. I hope you do too. 
 
I'll be playing catch up this week - is it autumn yet where you are? We've had one of the hottest days of this year today, 35°C. When it's this hot and the air doesn't move, the best thing you can do is not think about fashion and find the nearest pool/lake/ocean to swim in, don't you think? So I feel a little hot just looking at this outfit - the past few weeks my shorts have been short and my tops thin and sleeveless. Nevertheless, this is one of my favourites - the red skirt was meant to be paired with that top! Red on red on red, it's definitely my happy outfit :) I have a few of those. 
 
I hope you've had a truly wonderful summer, I'd love to hear what you got up to while I was away. I managed to take a set of outfit pictures on my holiday and I can't wait to show you.

10 x 10 LOOK 7: A BIT GOTH

Happy Saturday, dear friends! I've been taking it a little slow with the blog this week, I finally got around to listing all the clothes I don't wear anymore on ebay (<a href="http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/katberries1/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=">here</a> and <a href="http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/gcaratti1/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=">here</a>). It's always such a chore, especially if you have 50+ items to sell. So that pretty much drained my internet energy :) 
 
But let's talk about this outfit today - the seventh look of the 10 x 10 challenge. Has a bit of a goth vibe, doesn't it? I even tried to pull a serious goth face while we were taking photos, oh boy, you should see the outtakes. Safe to say smiling just works better for me. Every time I keep a straight face I get a comment from my boyfriend telling me I look super angry. 
 
This outfit isn't actually the one I planned to wear during the challenge, but I put it together one day and it was something a little different, so I thought it would be a good one to show. Funnily enough, I think the outfit would look good in autumn - as a way of layering your summer dresses. (Or in the summer, if your days, like mine, don't surpass 19°C.) 
 
Even though I've never had a goth or an emo phase, I love using clothes to express my different moods and personalities, I find that is what fashion is about for me. So, you know, put on black boots and a black scarf and live it up in the abandoned local cemetery. Or whatever your idea of fun is :)

10 x 10 LOOK 6: CAMPING CHIC

Hi friends, how's your weekend? I have a couple more 10 x 10 outfits to shoot and I'm hoping to finish that today. I've planned everything I'm wearing so it shouldn't be too hard. 
 
What I am finding hard though, is styling these denim shorts. I like wearing them because they're comfortable, but they definitely lack the wow factor. They're just really simple and I guess my trouble is that I like to wear them with interesting and colourful tops and I don't really have those in the 10 x 10. (Perhaps apart from the red stripe t-shirt.) How do you style your denim shorts? I'd love to have a loose white peasant top to pair them with. 
 
So here I put together a bit of a casual (camping) chic look, that, I keep thinking, I maybe can't quite pull off. It would work for a summer barbecue, just swap the lace top for a simple tank. Or even throw a checked shirt into the mix and go for a full on camping vibe :) I'd actually love to have a green blue checked shirt to wear with the shorts. 
 
These are the shorts I diy-ed from a charity shop pair of boyfriends jeans, and I'm pretty happy with them. I distressed them a little bit, you can see that on the back pocket. My only doubt was whether to have the legs' hem line folded or whether to just cut them at the desired length and leave them fray for a more careless look. I love the careless look and would generally prefer it, but I wasn't sure it would work here. So I just folded them twice for now and who knows, maybe I'll take the plunge and cut them off higher soon. Same with the distressing, I wasn't feeling brave enough for wide slits down the front, but like I said, the night is still young. Do you think frayed leg ends would work? 
What do you wear when you go camping?

Well, hello! I'm back with another 10 x 10 outfit, and what do you know, we're halfway through! I really wanted to share a look with my denim shorts, but unfortunately the weather has been playing up recently so I haven't been able to snap those pictures just yet. In hopes of forgiveness, I'm sharing this playsuit outfit we shot last week instead :) 
 
I love that play + jumpsuits came into fashion (am I the only one who keeps confusing which one's which?). Even if most of the time I try one on I look like I'm wearing pyjamas. There was one jumpsuit last year (that IS the long one, right? :) ) that I got in New Look and kind of loved. It had small flowers all over and in the end I had to return it, because as much as I liked it, it felt like wearing a costume. My ideal playsuit or jumpsuit would go easy on the pattern and crazy colour combos, it would be sleeveless with comfortable strap, well fitting but also easy breezy. Safe to say, I'm never going to find it. 
 
So even though play + jumpsuits have been having a comeback for the past few years, this patterned, peter pan collared piece is the only one I have. It's okay, it is still fun, but it doesn't fully reflect my style anymore and given the chance, I'd happily trade it for a more neutral version. Like <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/80783387042582411/">this amazing playsuit</a> that I've had pinned for ages but unfortunately wasn't able to locate anything even remotely similar to it. I'll just have to bide my time and wait for the perfect one to crop up some day. Do you wear one pieces? 
 
I love that they can be so easy to style and as long as you have one that fits right, you have your outfit sorted. Pair it with cute sandals, a tote, even a straw hat for a laid back holiday look or with heels and jewellery (for some reason I love gold with playsuits) for a date night. Or add a blazer for a more of an office look - oh, that actually sounds pretty lovely. 
 
I'm wearing mine with a huge cardigan to tone down the print a bit and also because it feels like I'm wearing a bath robe outside - a little bit undone. Pairing it all with a bag, shade of which matches your hair, will only add extra bonus points and make it look like you really thought about the look ;)

If you're going to tie your shirt in a knot, summer is possibly the best time to do it. The laid back styling is meant for this season and I find that it looks beach-y and at the same time, chic. 
 
What's best about it is how effortless it looks: "Hey, I just threw this on as I ran out of the house," when in reality you've spent 10 minutes perfecting the knot and the fit (I of course didn't, I just threw it on as I ran out of the house, ehrm ;) ) 
 
My favourite knotted shirt pairing might actually be with high-waisted shorts. The top buttons carelessly undone and a pretty a bikini top underneath. But alas, my Levi's 501s are not available to me at the moment so I had to make do with a high waisted skirt. It's a bit of a strange outfit for me, I think looking back it would have felt more my style with birks instead of the trainers. But that's what you get when you listen to fashion advice dispensed by your boyfriend :) Although, he wasn't completely off with the trainers. 
 
Do you ever knot your shirts? This blue one isn't totally suited for it, it has a bit of a strange cut, but I'd love to find a sleeveless one I could play around with.

10 x 10 LOOK 3: EXPERIMENT A LITTLE TODAY

Happy July, my friends! It's finally summer-hot here in Manchester, if only for a few days. 28°C in the shade yesterday! Or 82F for my American readers, so you don't have to go google convert it :) 
 
To be completely honest with you, when temperatures hit these highs it becomes really hard for me to give a damn about fashion. Okay, that may be a slight exaggeration, but on those hot summer days you'll find me standing in front of my closet, trying to figure how to wear the least amount of clothes possible while keeping it comfortable and decent. I don't understand how people keep being so stylish in California - it's just too hot guys! Although, there is the thing about the possibility of throwing oneself in the ocean to take the edge off. I could live with that. 
 
My one summer clothing advice is: avoid polyester. It sticks to you like a second skin, and not in a good way. So...it's just as well that the top you see here is 100% made of it, right? But before you tell me to go eat my words I just have to say that these photos were taken when it was some 10° colder, and while even then polyester is not my first choice of fabric, we have to work with what we get, don't we. 
 
And actually, the "top" is the upper part of a playsuit that I somehow unexpectedly put into my <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/06/10-x-10-mini-summer-capsule.html">10 x 10 challenge</a>. I knew then that I'd have to wear it as a top at least once to preserve variety and I'm quite glad of it in the end, because I kind of like it as a top too. Cute print, check; peter pan collar, check. What more could a girl want? Well, to tell the truth, peter pan collars aren't really my thing anymore but apparently this outfit looks very me, as stated by my designated photographer boyfriend. 
 
To stop myself from rambling, I'll finish up with my wisdom of the day (I'm using the word "wisdom" lightly): experiment a little with your wardrobe today. Wear a dress as skirt or a playsuit as top, try something unexpected for you. But goodness, don't try it with polyester if it's as hot as it is here where you are...unless you don't perspire - in which case, let's trade bodies.
