3x20 HOW TO WEAR TRENDS WITH A CAPSULE WARDROBE

I'm just gonna come straight out and say it: I got these pants in Lidl. Yes, Lidl, the global discount supermarket store (as Wikipedia puts it). Not really a place you think about when I say "fashion," is it? You may think cheap sweets, basic fruit &vegetables, and perhaps a deal-of-the-week cycling jacket. Sometimes they have the most random things in their weekly deals (and they can be pretty cool too). 
 
My point is, I found a pair of pants in a cheap store. I'm not ashamed of it, not everything I own has to be carefully hand picked and selected out of a dozen possibilities. Sometimes cheap stuff can be the good stuff. I'm not encouraging you to go on a Primark shopping spree, I'm saying it's nice to take the pressure off from time to time and just get something that isn't of amazing quality and might not last decades, but will serve for a season or two and bring you joy while it lasts. 
 
Maybe if I had a different budget I wouldn't give these pants another look. Maybe I would, I don't know. Their purpose though, is to fill a certain hole in my wardrobe right now. Then, in a couple of years' time when they've either worn out, lost their shape, faded in colour or I simply stopped liking them, I'll be ready to say goodbye. And maybe that wardrobe hole won't be there to fill anymore either. 
 
To be completely honest, the reason I grabbed these cheap jeggings without thinking twice was that while I like and wear them now, I don't think they will be my style two years down the line. It's funny how you can sometimes predict these things: "In 2017, I'll be over the printed trousers trend." Because that's what it is, a trend I wanted to try, to see if it would become something to adopt for my wardrobe and my style. Now I did, I can safely say it's not. 
 
I do wear the jeggings proudly and not just because they're in my spring capsule and I have to. I like them, even though I know they're not 100% me. Bottom line of what I'm trying to say today is: Experiment. Don't feel boxed in with your capsule wardrobe, throw a couple trends in, just for the hell of it. You might end up loving them. And if not, you'll have consolation in the fact that you tried something new, committed to it for a while and learned from the experience. And that's a valuable lesson in itself.

A few words about the outfit: I paired pants with a dress! Definitely not a combination I'd normally go for. I'm trying to keep it fresh for you guys :) The reason it works is because the "dress" is basically just a long shirt. I don't know if I'm ready to wear it with my indigo jeans, but the printed pants are perfect for this combo. Or course, the shiny slippers help - even if my boyfriend says they make me look like a grandma.

3x19 THE CAMEL COAT I NEVER HAD

I call this cardigan my "housecoat." It's big, long, warm and not at all unlike a dressing gown. I throw it on for quick errands, like running to the grocery store to pick up an ingredient we're missing for dinner. It's really casual. And also like the camel coat I never had. 
 
I love when I find a piece of clothing that's versatile. So while I often wear this cardigan with jeans and t-shirt, I thought it would be fun to pair it with something fancier. Like the fanciest dress I have in this capsule. Or just, the fanciest dress I have, full-stop. I wanted to dress it down for a casual lunch in town - but it turns out, even with my housecoat of a cardigan, the outfit's still pretty fancy. 
 
When I came downstairs ready to go, my boyfriend made me doubt myself as he asked if I wasn't a bit overdressed for a sushi bar. I definitely was. So I changed my sleek black loafers for leopard print flats and promised him I wouldn't at least wear the necklace inside. (But I basically said that because I didn't want the feathers falling down on my spicy salmon nigiri anyway. Nobody touches my spicy salmon nigiri.) 
 
We snapped the pictures right after lunch and it seems that the stress of ongoing traffic on the street produces better results than a calm setting of a cinema car park. I've always worked better under pressure. 
 
There's one thing I wanted to ask you, what do you wear on top of your dresses? I find that if I need an extra layer, most of the time the sweaters I have don't really work. Maybe the cropped one, but the others kind of "drown out" the outfit, if that makes sense. Which leads me to cardigans. Because they're usually longer they don't divide the outfit into weird proportions, and because they're open at the front, you still have that feeling of wearing a dress, rather than a sweater and a weird skirt. 
Or do you just reach for your trusted jean jacket?

3x18 DOUBLE DENIM (AGAIN) + WEEKEND LINKS

So it seems both the UK and the US have a long weekend ahead. My favourite kind of weekend. Do you have any exciting plans? We're going out for lunch to our fave sushi place - can't wait! It's been a long time since I had sushi. And hopefully the sun will show up, as promised by the BBC forecast, because I want to go throw a frisbee around in the park. 
 
This outfit is something I wanted to wear since the start of the spring wardrobe. Simple and nice: silk shirt, ballet flats, jeans and a jean jacket. It's just something that always works, no matter what. I also like how these photos turned out - our local cinema's parking lot is proving to be my failsafe backdrop for when there's no time to venture out.

MY SUMMER CAPSULE WARDROBE WISH LIST

The summer is slowly creeping up on us and last week it dawned on me that I should be introducing my summer wardrobe in about a month's time! Around this time last season I already had a vision for the next capsule and was even starting to shop, but I have to be honest, I have only just begun thinking about the summer. 
 
Why is that? Well, a) I'm really happy with my spring wardrobe and definitely haven't exhausted my options there yet, 
b) it's still freaking cold here, and 
c) I find summer hard to dress for. 
 
So let's talk about that for a minute. I get hot easily but I also don't love bearing too much skin, so I prefer longer shorts, like mid-thigh long, which leads me to problem one: the majority of shorts I've seen in stores are either itty bitty "can't-bend-down-because-my-behind-will-show" short, or long culottes. And if I do see a good cut and length, chances are they're not in the colour I want, or have a loud print. 
 
I also seem to own only 2 sleeveless tops. I always gravitate towards short sleeve tees and find they usually have more interesting designs and cuts, but this year I really need to find something sleeveless. Problem two: most of sleeveless tops are either made of polyester (summer=perspiration, polyester=death), or they look like rags. Like something you wear a couple times and then all it's good for is wiping spills off the floor. 
 
Good sleeveless tops are hard to find but definitely not impossible. I like natural materials and especially so in the summer: cotton, linen, silk. One of the styles I have an eye on is sleeveless cotton shirt. Which leads me to the wish list above: 
 
1. <a href="http://www.hm.com/gb/product/89990?article=89990-D&cm_vc=SEARCH#article=89990-D">The top is from H&M</a> and everything about it is right. Cotton? check. Understated pattern? check (and you can always tuck the bottom part of the shirt in.) Good colour? check. I can see it dressed up or down and so to me that's a great capsule wardrobe all rounder. 
 
2. Beverly Hills sweater. I already own this - me and thousands of other girls - because this sweater is from Primark. It's pretty much the only Primark thing I own anymore (<a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/04/my-workout-wardrobe.html">apart from two sports bras</a>) and I was actually going to sell it, but I think it will be great for the summer and if anything should happen to it, it won't make too sad. 
 
3. <a href="http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-synchronised-swimmers-cotton-scarf-blue/p1691363">A lightweight scarf</a>. A scarf is a must for me in the summer, for those reasons stated in the photo above and also to add some fun to outfits. This one is from John Lewis and I absolutely love the pattern. It looks like flowers at first but upon closer inspection you'll find it's actually synchronised swimmers in formation. Isn't it amazing? 
 
4. Classic denim Levi's. Or any denim shorts. I own a pair and I love it except for it being quite the itty bitty kind. Still, I can't really imagine summer without them. 
 
5. <a href="http://www.newlook.com/shop/shoe-gallery/view-all-shoes/black-leather-lace-up-strappy-sandals-_332519501?productFind=wish-list">Lace up strappy sandals from New Look</a>. Shoes, ah, this summer brings a plethora of amazing styles and it's really hard to pick just a few. I remember last year I was struggling a little to find the perfect pair of simple sandals, and this time I have to restrain myself from wanting them all. I'd opt for leather over man made, especially if you can find it for a comparable price. 
 
6. <a href="http://www.teva.co.uk/1006910.html?dwvar_1006910_color=ETWR#start=2&cgid=women-sandals">Tevas</a>. This is a brand that I know for their sturdy sandals that people wear on summer hikes. However, in the past few years they're really upped their style game and I am definitely lusting after the ones pictured. Teva original universal lux in sea fog. Absolutely love the shade of violet and I bet I'd love the comfort too. They're great sporty sandals but thanks to the new designs I can see myself wearing them with skirts and dresses too. They are the new birkenstocks, in my opinion. 
 
So that's my wish list so far and I'm hoping I'll be able to afford parts of it soon. Are you thinking about your summer wardrobe already? What trend are you planning to adopt this year?

3x17 SOME CLOTHES YOU HAVE TO GROW INTO

I feel like such a girl, a lady, whenever I wear this skirt. I bought it in the summer sales last year, just a couple hours after my flight landed in Bratislava. I don't even know what I liked so much about it in the first place - it wasn't exactly my style, it was a little too fancy for my super casual summer wardrobe. Yet, out of all the things I tried on that afternoon, this was the piece I decided had to come home with me. I didn't try lots of things on, only five or six pieces perhaps, but I told myself, whatever happens, I can only buy one. That was right around the time I decided to change my shopping behaviours and be more intentional with my purchases. The humble beginnings of my minimalist journey. 
 
So I bought it. This beautiful, pleated midi skirt that I had yet to figure out how to wear. (And that is, apparently, a blogger favourite, or so I keep reading.) And if I'm being completely honest, in the coming months, whenever I saw it hanging in the wardrobe, I questioned my decision. It was far from the most worn piece. Did I make the right choice in getting it? Was my first intentional purchase a wrong one? 
 
As winter turned into spring it slowly became clear that this, now is the time for this skirt to finally shine. It's the kind of piece that makes you feel nice and light again, after the chunky layers of comfy sweaters of winter. It's a skirt for brunches or afternoon teas. And I love wearing it now, because I love how it makes me feel. Feminine, and sophisticated. Grown up and like I know what to do in this world. It may not be the star of my closet, but it's sure earned its place there. 
 
And like I said in my very <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/03/3x1-i-want-to-look-nice-sometimes.html">first spring outfit post</a> - the first time I showed you this skirt - I just want to look nice sometimes. So that's what I'm gonna do.

P.S. I'm sorry about the photos, we took them with the last of the evening sun and I don't exactly love how they turned out. I did love the outfit which is why I thought it'd be a shame not to share it, despite the photos' shortcomings.

Double denim action is back! Along with two other big favourites: the NB trainers and a turquoise purse. I'm so predictable ;) 
This is the third and final look made from my <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/05/what-to-pack-for-weekend-trip-capsule-wardrobe.html">mini weekend wardrobe</a> I talked about last week. (Here's <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/05/3x14-personal-style-outfit-that-ticks-all-boxes.html">look 1</a> & <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/05/3x15-on-breaking-capsule-wardrobe-rules.html">look 2</a>) 
 
I was excited to wear this outfit - I love the crispness of the white blouse and how it shines in this outfit. It embodies what I want my style to be this spring: clean, feminine and happy. 
This blouse is a piece of clothing that will do really well in day-to-night transitions. Something that can be worn with a pencil skirt for a smart look or with jeans for a more casual date night. I'd swap the shoes, bag (for something more neutral) and replace the denim jacket with something fancier. An unstructured blazer or a cardigan with some lovely detail. Add a bracelet or a necklace and voila! All ready for the evening. Do you have anything that's so easy to style for day and night looks? 
 
I, of course, paired it with trainers for a day out exploring in St Albans. A nice town with a beautiful cathedral. Down in the park we even witnessed moorhen feeding. They build their nests right in the middle of the water and this one was just a couple metres away from the public path. 
 
I'm becoming a big fan of monochrome outfits and this one is a pretty great representative of what those might look like in real life. I'd love to wear one with beige and blush tones. So pretty!

One of the capsule wardrobe rules is to only have things in your current wardrobe that you love and would wear right now. And it is a great rule, but today, I'm going to talk about why I decided to forego it with this denim skirt. Here's the story: 
 
This skirt was a late-ish addition to the <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/03/my-spring-capsule-wardrobe.html">spring wardrobe (updated post!)</a>. I've wanted a denim button up skirt since I saw <a href="http://www.asos.com/ASOS/ASOS-Denim-Dolly-Button-Through-Skirt-In-Midwash-Blue/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=5197382&cid=2639&Rf-200=3&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=36&sort=-1&clr=Midwashblue&totalstyles=93&gridsize=3">this one</a> on asos some time in February. It was just one of those trends that stuck out for me. I'd been wanting to add a couple skirts to my wardrobe and this one was pretty perfect for my style - great colour, simple lines. I could imagine wearing it with most of my clothes, whether it was tees, shirts, crop tops or sweaters, ballet pumps, sandals or trianers. An all-rounder, basically. But ! Because there always is a but, or two with this skirt: it was expensive and very short. A big deal breaker. 
 
And as I searched the internet, all the variations of this button up skirt seemed to come down to mid-thigh or higher. I'm not a prude but I know I do not feel comfortable in short short skirts. Might look decent on the model, won't look decent on me. I needed it to be just a couple of inches longer. 
 
Then on a weekly grocery shopping trip I saw this skirt in Sainsbury's and pondered for a while whether to take it home. It was half-price and definitely not short short. A bit long, actually. And why do the buttons stop two thirds down? But I decided to jump the gun and get it - with the intention to shorten it to my liking. I knew I wouldn't have an access to a sewing machine for some time, so I told myself I'd have to wear it now, tailor later. And that's what I'm doing. 
 
I'm not in love with the skirt right now, but once I chop the buttonless part off (and yes, it will be just the right length then), I think we'll be able to make it work. I can't wait to wear it in the summer. And if I get bored of it, I can dye it black. I love this skirt's potential. 
 
Yes, I broke a rule, but it was for the greater good (haha). What I'm trying to say is, it's okay to follow rules and it's okay to break them from time to time, as long as you have a good reason. Don't go breaking rules just like that now, okay? You have to put some thought into it.

I look at this outfit and I think, this is it - this is my style. Has that ever happened to you? That you put an outfit together, look at yourself in the mirror and you just think, this is so me. It's such a wonderful moment. It feels like all these other times, you've been wearing shoes that are just a bit too big or a little too small. They're alright, you like wearing them but they don't fit you 100%. And then one day, you find a pair that is your size. It fits perfectly. That's how I feel looking back on this outfit. 
 
The thing is, I can't quite put my finger on what makes this outfit the outfit. I just know it is. 
I can identify a few things, though: it's simple, feminine, comfortable and chic. I think I'm a little bit in love with it ;) 
 
I'm going to keep trying to analyse it, because I'd love to feel like that every day. I feel like I've come a long way from last autumn when I started analysing my style for the first time, right before putting together my <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2014/10/autumn-capsule-wardrobe.html">first capsule wardrobe</a>. I now know that I lean towards slightly different styles as different seasons come and go. I want more colour and more boho in S/S and clean lines and comfortable looks in A/W. But there's always a core that stays the same. The feminine, the uncomplicated. There are also things that'll never be my style, like revealing dresses or high heels. Because I know they're not me. 
 
The amazing thing is that now that I got to know myself, I feel a lot less pressure to wear certain trends or to look certain ways. It's freeing to have a solid ground to stand on, instead of second-guessing every decision. This is me, I feel great.

A word about the clothes themselves - you won't quite see this sweater dress in my capsule wardrobe - not because it's new, but because I listed is as a sweater. A black sweater. That's because I didn't like how it looked as a dress but I loved how it looked as a sweater so I decided to wear it as that. And then just before this trip I tried it on again, I put a jean jacket over it and loved the result. So here it is, my super versatile sweater dress that ended up being a part of my 100% me outfit. </div>

I also wear it back to front because it has a button up back and I just love that detail. It adds a little extra interest, much like a necklace would. 
 
I wore this outfit on a day out exploring in London. I especially love that there are huge parks that are part of the big centre. Nothing like that here in Manchester. The photos were taken in Regent's Park, which I think is my favourite. It's huge, there are places to admire the flowers, to go for a jog or have a picnic and you can always find a part of it that isn't crowded. It's a winner.

My biggest struggle whenever I go on a trip somewhere is how to be comfortable and look chic. I hate looking like a tourist, you know? Though, sometimes one can't avoid it + the camera around my neck almost always gives me away :) 
 
And while it is admittedly easier with a capsule wardrobe, I still had to have a little think about what to take with me. Last time I shared my <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/04/how-to-pack-for-weekend-away-minimal.html">weekend trip wardrobe, I spoke about a packing rule of two</a>. It really makes packing easier as it gives me some sort of structure. (And it could just as well be a rule of three for a week-long trip, three bottoms, three layers, three pairs of shoes and however many tops you might need.) 
 
So here goes my nine item, four day arsenal as picked from my current capsule wardrobe. This time I deviated from the rule of two a little as I needed clothes for four days, so two tops wasn't enough, but apart from that I still have two layers (I'm counting the black sweater as a third top), two bottoms and two pairs of shoes. And actually, I would have been fine with only eight items because I ended up not wearing the leather jacket at all. It was a bit warmer than I expected. 
 
I took two of the most comfortable pairs of shoes I have in my closet right now - we went down to London one of the days and that always means miles and miles to walk. It also means I have some great pictures from the city to show you! 
 
The clothes I took with me turned out to be pretty monochromatic, from white through all shades of blue to black. Even my scarf was white and blue and my purse turquoise. I guess it's no surprise blue is one of my favourite colours. It's one of those that's always suited me, maybe because of my eyes, or maybe because of my cool toned complexion, as it turns out. Do you have a colour that you keep wearing through the years? Black would probably be the obvious answer. 
 
I love making these little packing lists, they really push my creativity and I have three looks to share with you from the past weekend. The first one will be this w/e.
