CHRISTMAS JUMPERS I'D MERRILY WEAR

Do you do Christmas jumpers? I love them. Or, more precisely, I love the idea of them as my Christmas jumper count currently stands at 0. I know. 
 
We don't really have a tradition of Christmas jumpers - on Christmas Eve when we have a big festive dinner and then also for lunch on Christmas day we dress up in nice, fancy-ish clothes to celebrate the special occasion. So you see, a very casual Christmas jumper doesn't fit the dress code, however many sequins it may have. 
 
Still, watching Christmas TV, baking or wrapping presents certainly packs a bigger punch when accompanied by a festive jumper (sweater for my American friends... You knew that). However - here comes the twist - I won't be satisfied with any sort of jumper. It appears I'm somehow particular, because nothing the (physical) shops are offering is catching my fancy. Instead, I have to rely on the internet - the trouble being that once I find something I love it's, more often than not, sold out, doesn't actually have an online shop or ships for extortionate amount of money (or, let's face it, costs an extortionate amount of money). 
 
So while I'm biding my time I've complied a (wish) list of the jumpers I do like. The top picks amongst the top pics are: 
1. cream jumper with tiny green tree pattern (primark), 
2. the crazy red one below it that's actually a sweatshirt, 
3. the pink and red one next to it that isn't limited to Christmas use (and one could argue it's therefore not a proper Christmas jumper but hell, it was in the Christmas secion of the website so one can kindly shut up) 
4. sausage dogs in Christmas jumpers (primark) 
5. candy canes 
6. and perhaps the closest contender to #1 is navy blue jumper with a string of baubles (warehouse)

THE ONE WHERE I WEAR JEANS WITH SANDALS

Sandals + jeans. Does that sound weird to you? It sure did to me, for years, till this Autumn. I never got how it could make sense, either you're hot or you're cold, right? Turns out, we just don't normally get the kind of weather where this would work. Dry, warmish and not windy. Only it did happen for about a week in September (yes this outfit is from September, there's no way you'd catch me wearing sandals in November!). 
 
So I tried it and surprised myself by liking the look. It's simple but it feels right. Do you know the feeling? When you just know you nailed your look that day. 
 
And let's talk about those sandals for a minute. I am in love with them. One of the top 5 purchases this year for sure.

I got them while on holiday in Greece. They're leather, locally made, beautifully minimalist and I just can't get over the colour. It's a very light tan, almost skin coloured. They are the prettiest sandals I've ever seen (they also have a strap at the back) and I've been trying to find leather this colour ever since. I'm on a hunt for a backpack or a saddle purse, let me know if you see one? 
 
The success of this outfit is in the details. The subtle colour palette for example. From bottom to top it's light tan, black, rust and chestnut (hair). Black and a few different shades of brown (and who said black + brown were a bad idea? Not me.). It works and it still feels a little new. I'm already thinking how to translate this palette into a more wintery outfit. PITCH

Have you guys heard of the new TV show Pitch? It's about baseball. But don't tune out just yet. The premise: Ginny Baker is a talented pitcher who rises to fame when called up by the San Diego Padres to become the first woman in Major League Baseball. She quickly becomes the face of the team thanks to unwanted media attention. Ginny is the only sports story out there. A poster child for change and hope for girls and women athletes everywhere. She's a 23 year old with a huge burden on her shoulders. Half the world sees her as a superhero, the other expects and even wants her to fail.

Having grown up in Europe where baseball isn't a thing, it's safe to say I have no knowledge of the sport. I have no idea about the rules, positions or plays. But with this show, it doesn't matter. Baseball is a huge part of it, yes, but it's also only a setting. It helps immensely that Ginny is played by the incredibly beautiful Kylie Bunbury. Let's hope that shows with strong female leads are here to stay. 
 
Pitch is well scripted. It possesses all qualities of a bing-worthy show (though only 5 episodes are out, episodes come out Thursdays on Fox). It's a fast-paced sports drama with multi-dimensional characters and great dialogues and a fair soundtrack. It puts the characters in uncomfortable situations, such as putting a woman into a male dominated territory, and gives it a chance to play out. Tough situations show what people are really made of, right? 
 
So it's been established I'm not a baseball expert but it seems it <a href="https://newrepublic.com/article/137011/foxs-pitch-not-pure-fiction">may not be purely fictional</a> for a woman to be in MLB (Major League Baseball, I speak to lingo now). If you love baseball or don't give a crap about baseball, it really doesn't matter with this show. It may not give 100% in closing the gender gap (Ginny's interest in baseball is attributed to men - her idol is her teammate Mike Lawson even though as the linked article above explains there were 3 black women in the 50s who joined professional male baseball teams and faced dual discrimination, with them being black and women). 
 
In reality it doesn't matter if you love or don't give a crap about baseball. Pitch is a heartwarming drama about a woman breaking the glass ceiling with her screwball. Give it a try.

Boy, I don't even know how to start this post because there is so much that I want to tell you. There's a whole other world out there, behind the curtain. 
 
At the beginning of summer I landed a new internship as a web editor for two digital radios. It's a job I really like and I have great colleagues (which already is a huge improvement to my last job where, let's just say, my boss wasn't the kind of person you become friends with). While learning the ropes there, I started a second job - just to be able to support myself as all the internship pays is basically pocket money. A few hours a week I wait on tables at this huge but hip café that's also a bookshop. I'm also taking Spanish and German lessons. 
 
It seems to have become a tradition for me to take a bit of a break from the online world over the summer. I want to spend time outside, I love me a good holiday but I don't like my style enough (though it's improved from last year) to post photos of outfits. And then somehow we got into autumn and I've been thinking that only posting about style and minimal / capsule wardrobes isn't as much fun as it used to be. Which is where I get to the point. Outfits and especially the style posts with graphics are a lot of work. <a href="http://www.katberries.com/search/label/colourful%20closet">Some posts</a> have taken me days to prepare even. And I loved it and it's my hobby, but it can get a little much. 
 
I've always wanted for this blog to be a place for fashion but life things also, an open diary of things I love and things I think you might love too. And of course a documentation of my style and personal style development (I'm already looking forward to looking back at old posts in 5 years time <img alt="😉" class="emoji" draggable="false" src="http://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/72x72/1f609.png" style="background-color: white; background-image: none; border: none; box-shadow: none; box-sizing: border-box; color: #494949; display: inline; font-family: "open sans", helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; height: auto; letter-spacing: 0.2px; line-height: 23.4px; margin: 0px 0.07em; max-width: 100%; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: -0.1em; width: 1em;" />). 
 
Quite a few times over the past couple of months I've discovered something, a new TV show, a great book, place, event or a new finding and I wanted to share it with you but then stopped myself because I thought, oh, I need to post this and this first. First, I need to photograph this and that and it needs to be just so. And I've been putting this pressure on myself before I realised that I set my own limits and just as I put them there I can also take them out. There's one blog I love to read, <a href="http://foxsocks.co.uk/">Fox Socks</a>, and it's precisely for the writer's spontaneity (and wonderful storytelling talent!). I was recently transcribing and translating an interview with poet Andrea Jarmai and she said: "I find that I become cross-pollinated by everything." It was a beautiful expression for what I think a lot of us feel. 
 
I too take inspiration from everything. And I love the spontaneity of it, that I can share something with you and it doesn't have to be this extremely well thought out, advice filled post. It can just be a thought. And that, to me, feels liberating.

10 x 10 SUMMER CHALLENGE: THE OUTFITS

Most of you are already deep into thinking about fall colours and style but I hope you can indulge me in this summery round up. It's been a long time coming but I am finally getting around to showing you the outfits I made from my ten (+3 shoes) items. If you follow me on <a href="http://instagram.com/katberries">instagram</a> you probably saw these, though with the new algorithm one can't be sure, right? 
 
I had a lot of fun taking these photos and putting the outfits together. As it happens, I planned all my outfits beforehand, because I'm the kind of person who's inspired by new experiences / visual stimuli. If I'm looking at the same clothes for a while, the inspiration just flows right out. That's why I'm an advocate for "hiding" my clothes off-season. When I get a new piece, what I try to do is note down all the ways I could style it, because I know the ideas will be coming to me the most when the piece is still new to me.

Why did I do the 10 x 10 challenge? 
a) I hate my personal style in the summer 
b) I have very little summer clothes I feel good in, so I needed to try do more with less 
 
Did I learn anything from the challenge? 
For sure. It taught me I can't just wing it, for me to be successful, I have to do a bit of planning. As I said, as the challenge goes on I become a bit fed up with the clothes and it helps immensely to have a ready-made list of outfits I can wear. 
 
It also reassured me that yes, you can have a colourful wardrobe and still have mix and match potential. 
 
I have a better idea of my style than I did a year ago, but I am nowhere near done. 
 
Why did I cheat and actually work with 13 items including shoes? 
10 items altogether just seemed too much pressure to me. I know I struggled last year toward the end of the challenge and that didn't include shoes either. And who says? I can make up my own rules <img alt="😉" class="emoji" draggable="false" src="http://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/72x72/1f609.png" style="background-color: white; background-image: none; border: none; box-shadow: none; box-sizing: border-box; color: #494949; display: inline; font-family: "open sans", helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; height: auto; letter-spacing: 0.2px; line-height: 23.4px; margin: 0px 0.07em; max-width: 100%; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: -0.1em; width: 1em;" /> 
 
The truth is I could have made at least 3 more outfits from my selection (so really 13 x 13) but they didn't particularly add anything new or interesting. Here they are in basic form:

My favourite outfits? 
I'm actually finding it hard to pick one or two I like the most - which is a good thing! So perhaps I'll tell you which feel the most me: #1, #4 and #9. I also love #2 it's such a lovely holiday outfit, but perhaps a little too girly for my style. 
 
And my least favourite? 
Definitely #3 and #10. Both including the stripy dress - which I guess says a lot about said dress... 
 
Will I do this again? 
Most definitely. It's a great way to refresh my stylistic game and explore where my style is at and where it's going. It's like a separate entity. 
 
Perhaps in winter I'll jump on the Unfancy + Style Bee bandwagon. I might even include shoes. But no promises here!

10 x 10 SUMMER CHALLENGE

Why, hello! I seem to have begun me a tradition last summer with my first <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2015/06/10-x-10-mini-summer-capsule.html">10 x 10 challenge</a>. The idea comes from <a href="http://stylebee.ca/">Lee</a> and it's very straightforward: I'll be building 10 outfits out of 10 pieces. It's a great exercise to test your styling skills / get excited about a small wardrobe / try out a non-comital capsule wardrobe as an experiment. It's pretty fun. And if you travel and tend to overpack, it teaches you how you don't have to. Speaking from experience here. 
 
Let's talk rules real quick. Mine are loosened up - I have 10 items that are clothing and I don't count shoes into that, though they are part or the graphic below. So yes, I have 13 items, and you can call that cheating or you can get on board <img alt="😉" class="emoji" draggable="false" src="http://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/72x72/1f609.png" style="background-color: white; background-image: none; border: none; box-shadow: none; box-sizing: border-box; color: #494949; display: inline; font-family: "open sans", helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; height: auto; letter-spacing: 0.2px; line-height: 23.4px; margin: 0px 0.07em; max-width: 100%; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: -0.1em; width: 1em;" />. I could make it into 13 outfits, but I'm too lazy and a one-woman-show right now. Let's have a look at the <strike>13</strike> 10!

The colour palette is pretty standard for me: blues, greys and reds. I've found my jam, and now my goal is to brighten up my wardrobe with more colours and feel confident in them. (I've started with a bright yellow dress. It's amazing.)

I can't remember the exact point when I decided that clogs, or more precisely clog sandals, would be my it shoe for the summer. Perhaps it was after seeing <a href="http://stylebee.ca/">Lee</a> rock them so often on her blog? Or after seeing a snap or two on instagram from some blogger or other? Clogs have never been in the spotlight for me, till now. In fact I didn't even think about them as an option, which is why I'm glad I "discovered" them at last. 
 
There was no way I could afford Bryr or Hasbeens clogs so I did a bit of research to see what else was out there. I found Lotta from Stockholm pretty quickly, and while they have some great styles, I didn't feel like I've found the dream pair. After some more googling, I've discovered Moheda. Handmade in Sweden, shipping worldwide. I decided on the low heel style called Klara. All clogs have a platform and the heel is just slightly elevated with this one. (If you like a higher heel, try the Betty style. Many, many colours to choose from!) It took me a few days to decide on the colour but in the end I went with blue. A little colourful but not too out there. A muted statement shoe. I'd like to highlight here the placement of the ankle strap. I don't have model long legs so ankle strap shoes often cut me off at a weird place. These clogs have their strap low - so your legs appear longer. I have quite slender ankles so I don't mind showing them off!

CUSTOMER SERVICE</h4>
I received my clogs a week after ordering on standard shipping. The leather on the left shoe, I noticed, was fraying in places, but nothing scissors couldn't take care of. I wore them out that day to a café and as I was sitting down with one leg over the other, I noticed that actually one of the metal clips that holds the leather and the wood together was placed too low and thus the leather was ripping in that place. The leather on the left shoe just seemed different (and worse) quality than the leather on the right. I snapped a few photos and emailed Moheda. 
 
They got back to to say they'd be sending another pair my way. The customer service rep was real nice and I reckon because the return shipping for the defective clogs would be too much, I get to keep that pair too. I'll wear it till the leather rips and replace with the other pair then.

THE COMFORT</h4>
I was worried about the issue of comfort so much so that I asked a few friends over instagram about it. The sole is wooden of course, so it's harder than your usual shoe and you have to keep in mind that walking feels a little different because the middle part doesn't bend. But you get used to it pretty fast and they do feel pretty comfortable, after the initial shock of the unpadded footbed.

That's me sporting the clogs and my new colourful jumpsuit! If you've read <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2016/07/outfit-getting-dressed-in-summer-is-chore.html">last weeks post</a> you'll know I'm bad at summer dressing...so this is probably my best outfit this summer (yet).

CONCLUSION</h4>
I love my clog sandals. That says it all, doesn't it? There is <a href="http://moheda.co.uk/en/lady/monaco-light-brown/">this style</a> I really love but isn't available in my size, that would make a great shoe for smart casual outings or even more casual weddings. I love that colour! 
 
The one thing I'd change about my sandals are the clips that hold the leather on the wood. As one amazon reviewer said, they are a bit crude. I would prefer the circular studs instead. But all in all this is a great, comfortable shoe. Beautiful colour and weave and I find myself pairing them with all sorts of things, so it does get a stamp of approval from me.

I've mentioned it earlier this week on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BHPtkUKDTe1/?taken-by=katberries">instagram</a> and it has been a thing of the past few years too: I dislike my summer style. Yes, part of the reason is that my summer wardrobe is all mis-matched but another big part is the heat. 
 
Some people thrive on it, I, on the other hand, despise it. Above 27°C (80°F) means discomfort for me, 35°C (95°F) is pure hell. The only time I do thrive in these temperatures is on holiday. THE ANATOMY OF GETTING DRESSED</h4>
I love layering on an outfit, the tights, skirt and top, the light jacket with a brooch and a scarf around the neck. The hair down. A no can do in the summer. Having your hair down is like having a woollen sweater around your neck. Amazing in the winter, though. 
 
I'll stop complaining now, and explain why I'm talking about this in the first place. Uninspired wardrobe means uninspired outfits means bad outfit posts. I hope you'll enjoy some opinion pieces/short essays instead, for the time being. When I mentioned on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BF4Q2msqtDU/?taken-by=katberries">instagram</a> that I decided to upgrade my camera lens, a few of my insta friends asked me to share the results. I've wanted to get a new lens for the past two years, so you can imagine my excitement. If not, it went like this: 🎉 💃 😍

LET'S GET TECHNICAL</h4>
While the kit lens (18-55mm) was good enough, I wanted something with better light sensitivity. Also, lately the kit lens has been playing up and it seems a small part is loose inside (I may have accidentally banged it one too many times). My camera is a low range DSLR, which means the autofocus feature is in the lens, not the body - which in turn means that if I didn't want to lose autofocus altogether, my choices were limited. I knew I wanted a prime lens (a lens of fixed focal length). 
My reasons were: 
 
<ol>
<li>generally speaking, prime lenses have better light sensitivity</li>
<li>they're smaller</li>
<li>they're lighter</li>
<li>they're cheaper</li>
<li>they're cool</li>
</ol>
 
I was kind of set on a 50mm, with it being reviewed as a nice all rounder. Good for outdoors and indoors, you don't have to be too close, nor too far from the object. It's the lens that gives the "most real" view. (If you look through the camera, the distance is more or less similar to real life view. 75mm will look as if you zoomed in.) 
 
Now we get to the nitty gritty part. Because there is a big BUT coming. If you look through the photography advice forums and articles, a lot of them forget to mention this - 50mm lens is a "real-life" lens on a full frame camera. If you have a lower range/entry level DSLR like I do, chances are it has a cropped sensor. A 50mm lens doesn't actually act like a 50mm on a cropped sensor camera. Cropped sensors (APS-C) have a magnification factor, which means you have to multiply the lens' focal length by 1.5 for Nikon and 1.6 for Canon. Quick maths reveals that on this kind of camera, a 50mm lens will act like a 75mm. Ah-oh. 
 
A great tip if you're deciding between focal lengths is to take your kit lens, set it to the mm value you're thinking about getting, perhaps it is 75mm, and look through the viewfinder without ever zooming in our out. Take some snaps if you like, then set the lens to 50mm and repeat. Then to 35mm. I found this to be a really quick and painless decision maker for me. 
 
I wanted real life-like view, so with cropped sensor and magnification factor in mind, this turned out to be a 35mm (which would be 52.5mm with full frame). I wanted an f/1.4 but that lens is like triple the price so f/1.8 will have to do. It's still a huge improvement from my f/4 kit lens. 
Okay! Now let's get to the fun part- testing.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS</h4>
Straight away, I wanted to test the low apertures. I set the camera to the lowest it can go - 1.8 - and shot a few things around the garden. I'm impressed! I can focus on the one thing that I want to be sharp and the blur sets the scene nicely. This is great for outfit shots (hello fellow bloggers) but also for any photo where you want to make sure one thing really stands out. 
 
Like in the photo below, the rose is the spotlight stealer while background is just blurry colours - you can't make it out. This may be the kitschiest show I've ever taken.

This little birdie was learning to fly and while he gathered his strength in between attempts, I was able to get close and snap a couple of shots. 
 
The shiny cake was something I whipped up last weekend. Lemon with surprise in the middle and orange + mint glaze. Yum. 
 
Below, my mum is playing with clay and making a dish that will be a present for my cousin's wedding this summer. The dish the cake is on is also made by her.

FIRST CONCLUSIONS</h4>
I still have to work on my manual focus skills and figuring out what aperture is best for what shot, but overall, I am in love. Heart eye emoji love. The lens is everything I expected it to be and it got me excited for photography all over again. It makes totally trivial things look interesting. 
 
I've since taken photos for an <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BGoXsd2qtJf/?taken-by=katberries">upcoming summer project</a> (the photo session turned into a work out), new in skincare products, new in make up products and couple new things I got for my summer wardrobe. They all look great, if I do say so myself. My camera is less bulky and the lack of zoom hasn't been a problem yet. I can't wait to try it with outfit shots, just as soon as I can convince my mum to take some <img alt="😉" class="emoji" draggable="false" src="http://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/72x72/1f609.png" style="background-color: white; background-image: none; border: none; box-shadow: none; box-sizing: border-box; color: #494949; display: inline; font-family: "open sans", helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; height: auto; letter-spacing: 0.2px; line-height: 23.4px; margin: 0px 0.07em; max-width: 100%; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: -0.1em; width: 1em;" />. I am an advocate for low aperture (as long as it's not just the tip of your nose that's in focus) and so far, I'm finding the lens an absolute dream.

As I'm writing this, I'm sitting outside on the patio, sipping on homemade lemonade. Have you started thinking about your summer wardrobe? Mine is a mess. I'm hesitant to even call it a wardrobe. It's more like a conceptless bunch of clothes. I prefer shorts to skirts in the summer for comfort and sleeveless tops. I have maybe two of each (that I'm not ashamed to be seen in, haha). + I totally hate strapless brass! Hence the big question: what the heck do I wear this summer? 
 
I'm even struggling to find summer outfit inspiration - real outfits I would wear. (Pinterest is absolutely no help if you're not a size XS Cali girl.) Send help! To make matters even worse, I get hot easily and ugh I hate the sweatiness summer brings. Boiling hot is only acceptable when one's by the sea. (Hear, hear!)

30 DAY SHOPPING FAST: THE RESULTS

For the whole of May I <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2016/05/30-day-shopping-ban.html">swore off shopping</a>. Clothes, exercise stuff, shoes, accessories, jewellery, books, even cosmetics. And today I'm here to tell you how it all went. 
 
 
Week 1: was a breeze. I'd actually stopped shopping towards the end of April, so first week of May was really week 2 for me. I didn't feel the need to get anything, I was content with the stuff - clothes, cosmetics and everything else I had. 
 
 
Week 2: I spent the whole week making <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BFnwAUNqtNQ/?taken-by=katberries">brooches</a>, so most of my time was devoted to sewing (and listening to movies while I was doing so, hashtag multitasking), which meant I had no time to even think about shopping. Of course, at the beginning of the week <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BFWRbBlqtDB/?taken-by=katberries">this happened</a>, something most women are familiar with <img alt="😉" class="emoji" draggable="false" src="http://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/72x72/1f609.png" style="background-color: white; background-image: none; border: none; box-shadow: none; box-sizing: border-box; color: #494949; display: inline; font-family: "open sans", helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; height: auto; letter-spacing: 0.2px; line-height: 23.4px; margin: 0px 0.07em; max-width: 100%; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: -0.1em; width: 1em;" />. What can you do, any journey isn't complete without a setback of some kind. 
 
 
Week 3: The week I'd almost broken the rules. But not for the reason you may think! It wasn't that I felt the urge to go and get something, it was plainly because a couple times I completely forgot about the shopping fast. One significant time was when I'd just written a <a href="http://www.katberries.com/2016/05/sensitive-skin-skincare-routine.html">skincare post</a>, where I talk about a product I love that's been discontinued. After I'd published it I found myself googling for old stock of said product. I put it in my virtual basket and clicked the checkout button... It finally clicked when the website asked me for card details. Oh well. I bookmarked and closed the site in time. 
 
 
Week 4: Ah, finally. OK, I admit. Things were starting to get a little annoying. Not because I missed clothes shopping terribly, but because my shopping ban included cosmetics and craft supplies too. I mean, I need a new razor! And a special thread! And I wanted to try self tan lotion for the first time in my life! Just those kinds of small nuisances that really aren't a big deal. 
 
But - in the interest of full disclosure, while I didn't end up buying any clothes in May, I did get that damn self tan lotion (in a moment of weakness). My vanity and curiosity got the better of me on that one! I thought you should know. 
And one more thing, I placed an order just before midnight on the 31st, for (ethically made) sandals. Why not wait just one more day? Well the company was offering free European shipping in May. And I'm on a budget, ladies. 
 
 
The takeaway: It's quite eye opening to realise how big a part shopping plays in our lives. I'm just so used to thinking of something I need or "need" and popping out to get it. Such a bad habit! Quitting everything cold turkey like that definitely had its perks. Not once was I horribly uncomfortable or put out. The exercise fulfilled its purpose - I wanted to get back on the minimal shopping train, and I think I did. Even though my summer wardrobe is a mess, I don't plan on adding very many things to it. 
 
 
What's next? For the next three months, I'm going to try and buy as little as I can. And if I do shop, I'll check the thrift stores first. Maybe I'll even sew a dress. Wish me luck!
